| The birth of a peucetic city on the hills, nowadays occupied by the urban centre of Altamura, attests the passage from dispersed villages in the territory to one centre of noticeable dimensions. Between the 5th and 3rd century B.C. the habitation became surrounded by a powerful double megalithic wall. One around the acropolis and one larger surrounding part of the countryside as well.
At some parts the wall is up to 6 meters wide at the base. Towards the top the wall becomes smaller.
At different places in the city parts of the wall are still visible.Recently parts of the megalithic walls have been restored, including lights and benches for a nice walk in the (little) park. |
