The Italian Military Chapel was built during World War I between the peaks of Mt. Pleče (1,299 meters) and Mt. Planica (1,376 meters) in the Mt. Krn mountain range. It was erected close to the first front line in the vicinity of large storage depots, observation posts, a hospital, trenches, bunkers, and gun emplacements. The chapel was named after Captain Celestino Bes and was built by the battalion named after him. The inscription on the crossbeam above the entrance reads CONSOLATRIX AFFLICTORUM (Sanctuary of the Suffering). The chapel was renovated by the staff of the Kobarid Museum under the direction of the Institute for the Preservation of the Natural and Cultural Heritage of Nova Gorica between July 1993 and September 1996. Take the road from Kobarid to the village of Krn and continue on to the parking lot in Planina Kuhinja (14 km). From there, it is two kilometers by dirt road to the serpentine above the spruce forest, then 20 minutes on foot on the marked trail to the chapel.
