| The Co-Cathedral of St. Eustace is the main church of Acquaviva delle Fonti. It is co-cathedral of the Diocese of Gravina-Altamura-Acquaviva delle Fonti.
The first building dates from the twelfth century (1158) on the ruins of a temple Messapian feudal Norman Robert Gurguglione. It was originally dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin.
The original church was rebuilt in 1529, under the government of John Donato Antonio Acquaviva. Completed and opened for worship in 1594 during the government of Alberto Acquaviva, the church was consecrated in 1623 in honor of St. Eustace by the Archbishop of Bari and Canosa Ascanio Gesualdo.
It was originally called "Palatina" probably to preserve it from the Archbishops of Bari
The palatine churches for their jurisdiction did not depend on the ordinary ecclesiastical power, but by the sovereign, who usually appointed clerics to his liking and he paid. |
