The World War I military cemetery lies among the spruce trees along the main road next to the civil cemetery. Austrian soldiers who died at the military hospital in Trenta and Russian prisoners who died during the construction of Vršič Pass are buried there. When the front was formed at Soča in 1915, the Austrians needed a transport road over Vršič so that they could supply the units at the front. To that end, they brought around 12.000 Russian military prisoners captured at the Eastern Front who built the road under inhuman conditions. They were housed in simple barracks, poorly fed and clothed, and many of them died of over-exertion and sickness. In the winter these workmen were under the additional threat of avalanches.
