| The area where today's church is located was already called Tirovšek in the middle ages. Tirovšek was one of the parishes of Gornji Grad. It was situated to the west of Gornji Grad and covered the territory of today's Šmiklavž and Tirosek all the way to the pass Črnivec. Nova Štifta as a parish separated from Gornji Grad in the 16th century. The church was built on the hill "Metul", where, according to hearsay, miraculous flames appeared in 1558. A year later, it was consecrated by bishop Peter Seebach. It burnt down in 1850 and in its place, the church of Marija Zvezda was built, which is one of most beautiful churches in Slovenia nowadays and well-known among pilgrims. |
