Ethnographic museum in Belgrade is one of the oldest museums on the Balkans. Recently it has celebrated its hundredth anniversary and it rightfully deserves to be called a guardian of national culture. Ethnographic Museum was established in February 1901, but its roots reach deeper into the past. Gathering of ethnographic items started as early as in the middle of 19th century, and in 1844 some ethnographic items could be found in the National Museum of Serbia (Serbskonarodni muzej).
Permanent exhibition of Ethnographic museum, through a story about fairs as mirrors of society, illustrates the whole traditional culture of 19th and 20th centuries: 1. Folk collectivity through centuries; 2. Scene of a large national fair in where one can see folk costumes; 3. Production and processing of textile, textile household items; 4. Every day traditional life: architecture, dwelling, economy, customs etc. Temporary exhibitions: Ethnographic Museum of Serbia organizes temporary exhibitions. Our intention is to present the Museum's fund as much as possible to our visitors, to present important scientific achievements and to signify relevant dates in the Museum's history. 1. Casa Mare 2.
