| A few kilometres north of Velika Gorica at today’s village of Ščitarjevo, hugged right up in a deep bend in the River Sava are the remains of the Roman settlement of Andautonia. Evidence suggests that this was once a sizeable and important community with influence over a wide area. Andautonia existed between the first and the fourth centuries AD, and excavations have uncovered well-made roads, comfortable homes and public buildings, a water supply and underfloor heating systems, baths and a necropolis. In and around Andautonia many Roman coins, ceramics, glass, jewellery, tablets, murals and mosaics have been found, resulting in a 16km square area being proclaimed of archaeological importance. There are quite a number of activities laid on for adults and children: it’s well worth checking out the Andautonia website before planning your visit.
