Vrana was a village of power in medieval Croatia and the castle was first recorded in the ninth century. There used to be a Benedictine Abbey here which was used by the Knights Templars at one stage. The fortress was burnt in the seventeenth century by the Venetians. Twenty per cent of the original structure remains including the southern wall, gate and battlements as well as the monastery chapel.
