On the place of the present day church, there was a church built before 15th century, but it burnt down in the Turkish Raid towards Vienna. The first church was probably wooden. Afterwards, counts Celjski built the church that lasted until the fire in 1738. Present-day church was built from 1738 until 1749. Parallel to the church, Pauline monastery was built. In the year 1761 bell towers were erected as well as chorus – place for the singers. Church is known for the two bell towers which is specific, since two bell-towers are usually built on cathedrals’. The blueprint of the church is almost identical to the famous basilica of St. Peter in Rome. The church is well known for fresco paintings in part of the shrine of Ivan Ranger „the Baptist“ from the 18th century.
