Lubenice dates from the prehistoric times and has been continuously occupied since. The town stands on a sheer rock 378 metres above sea level. It is fortified and contains medieval and baroque structures. During the Roman period it was known as Hibernita. Many archaeological finds have been discovered here and the city wall is preserved on the eastern side. Both gates on the north and south also remain. Lubenice became a world heritage site in 2005.
