| The capital city of Virunum stood here in the time of the Roman province of Noricum. In the early Middle Ages, the Carinthian Dukes were invested in Karnburg am Fürstenstein. A few kilometres to the north of Maria Saal, the Duke’s Chair stands in the shade of a grove.
The dukes took their place on it after their investiture, in order to swear an oath to the upper classes. Maria Saal is also home to perhaps the most important sacred building of the Gothic period in Carinthia, the provost and pilgrimage church of Mariae Himmelfahrt. |
