| The Magdalensberg is not only the first of four mountains in the annual "Four Mountain Run" but is also home to an important archaeological excavation site, with an open-air museum covering more than 3 ha. Investigations have revealed that the late-Celtic/early-Roman settlement of the Norikum kingdom arose a good 100 years before the town of Virunum on the Zollfeld. On the summit of the Magdalensberg is the filial church of St. Helena and Mary Maria Magdalene, built on the site of a Roman-Celtic temple.
"Austria's first capital" offers plenty of findings like the "Jüngling vom Magdalensberg", temple buildings, thermal facilities and the imperial gold bar foundry, the Roman "Fort Knox" of the Alps. |
