| At the base of the Maiella massif, the lake was made a conservation area in 1990 with a 300 ha nature reserve (plus 200 ha of unbuildable area). Its rich vegetadion makes this area a rare water habitat for numerous species of bird, including the great white heron, the blackswan and the greater flamingo. The reserve features an artificial lake formed by a dam on the Sangro river surrounded by marshes with reeds, water lilies, weeping willows and poplars. |
