| Housed in the neo-Classical Frigerj Villa, the Museum brilliantly documents the historic culture of the Abruzzo area, from the protohistoric period to the late Imperial Age. Fascinating examples of Italic sculpture include the impressive funerary statue of Capestrano Warrior, unearthed by chance near Capestrano. The statue dates back to the mid-6th C. BC. According to the inscription on the side, the statue portrays King Nevius Pompuledeius and it displays an extraordinary array of ancient offensive and defensive weapons. One of the museum's most important artefacts is the famous bronze Hercules at Rest, portraying the deified hero as a middle-aged figure, found in the sanctuary of Ercole Curino near Sulmona. It is thought to date back to the 3th C. BC and is considered a masterpiece of ancient sculpture. There is also the colossal statue of Hercules seated at a banquet, found in alba Fucens and dating back to the 1st C. BC. |
