The Church of St. Nicholas was mentioned as early as 1334. Since it burnt down due to the Turkish invasion in the year 1578, a new one was built, though in 1705 it burnt down as well, together with the entire town, vicarage and archives. On its ruins a new church was built in Baroque style. It was consecrated in 1759. The large Baroque altar and two side altars were made by an unknown master of Dolenjska and Posavje and the two side altars were made by the local artist Jernej Jereb. On the barrel ceiling there are frescos painted by the Italian master Domenico Fabris. Friderik Baraga, who was the vicar in Metlika, commissioned the Stations of the Cross from Josip Egartner, paid for the work and hung it up on the church walls himself. In the year 1268 the parish was incorporated into the order of Teutonic Knights and since 1735 it has been the seat of the provost's house in Metlika.
