Already in times long past a pilgrimage church could be found in Frauenkirchen and as early as 1335 Frauenkirchen was a well-known and popular pilgrimage village. After the 2nd siege of the Turks in Vienna the church was destroyed again. Soon after the withdrawal of the Turks the church was built again, but it soon was too small and couldn´t hold the numerous pilgrims. Because of this Count Paul Esterházy, who had been knighted by Emporer Leopold I for his loyal service, decided to build a large church in honor of the Virgin Mary. This impressive Baroque Basilica is 53 m long and the height of the towers also amounts to 53 m.
