| Back in the Middle Ages the Viktring Cistercian monastery was among the wealthiest of its kind in Carinthia. Founded by Duke Bernhard von Spanheim in 1142. The former convent church houses a series of precious glass paintings dating from 1400 and one of the biggest early baroque altars in Carinthia.
Historical art treasures include the five-storey high altar (total height 16 m) with a depiction of the Coronation of the Virgin (1622), as well as the choir termination (1400) with more than 50 glass panes. The central pane shows a portrait of the donor, Bernhard von Pettnau and his wife, and the sufferings of Christ. |
