| The massive 13th century structure of Castello Piccolomini, was reconstructed by Antonio Piccolomini di Aragona, a duke of Amalfi and count of Celano. It has cylindrical main towers and a "mastio" with the ruins of a battlement projecting from the corbels; it is sourrended by a ditch dug into a rock. The Castle is the only example of a fortified architecture in lacustrine style, in the entire region. It is particular link with the lake waters is that, once having formed the ditch, the waters penetrated into the wet-dock which was found in the interior of the defending walls. The original fortress was destroyed by order of Popo Pio II due to a quarrel between Isabella and her son Rugerotto. |
