Melk Abbey - one of the cultural gems of Europe. Melk has been of great religious and cultural importance for more than 1000 years; it was once a Babenberg Castle and in 1089 margrave Leopold II transformed it into a Benedictine monastery. The emperors Karl VI. and Maria Theresia, Pope Pius VI. and Napoleon once stayed in the Kaiserzimmer (emperors´ rooms). Today you can visit a permanent exhibition in these rooms and find out more about the history and the current situation of the abbey; visitors are attracted by selected exhibits from the treasure-chamber, the archives and the library of the abbey.
