| In the 3rd century A.D., two Christians, Giustino and Fiorenzo, came to the lands at the foot of the Gran Sasso mountain to bring the words of God. In 286 A.D., Fiorenzo's daughter, Giusta, a Christian virgin, was condemned to martyrdom and throw into a burning furnace. But she came out alive and was killed with a spear. The young woman was sanctified for this miracle. In the 12th century, the church of Saint Giusta was built on her tomb, in Bazzano; Roman materials from the nearby Vicu Offidius, with Vestine origins, were used for its construction. On the left side of the altar, there is the opening of the cave dedicated to the Saint where the martyrdom furnace and the entrace to the catacomb where she was buried with Saint Giustino are still kept. |
