We do not know the exact date of foundation of the monastery, but it is known that belonged to the order of the Benedictines from the outset and was dedicated to San Mauro. The conditions of the complex are currently disastrous; recently the only church underwent restoration static that have prevented the collapse. The interior has a single nave with side chapels are still visible in the refectory of the frescoes depicting the Last Supper discreet invoice. The complex was very looted but inside kept, until about twenty years ago, two works of great historical and artistic interest that could be recovered and restored. The first is a painting on canvas applied to board depicting a Madonna and Child, known as "Our Lady of Ambro", the work can be dated around the middle of the '200 and derives from the late Byzantine culture that influenced, yet remarkably, the 'art of the thirteenth century in Abruzzo. The other is a polychrome wooden statue and golden representing the same subject, dating back to the mid-1400s and is attributed to an artist who suffers from Abruzzo Tuscan influences. Both works are on display at the National Museum of Abruzzo in the sixteenth-century castle of the Eagle.
