| The church and monastery of St. Francis were founded in 1176 by Benedictine monks from Cava, and were at one time was dedicated to the Blessed Trinity. In the sixteenth century the complex was under the management of the Franciscans, and changed its name to San Francisco. Today the monastery next door there is the Municipal Library.
The facade of the church is of Romanesque style, decorated with wall columns, carved doorway, tympanum arches and a bell tower.
The three interior naves are divided by piers. The nave is covered by a succession of three domes, covered outside by pyramids with "chiancarelle" (slabs of local stone) in line with tradition in Puglia. |
