| It was built as a synagogue in the thirteenth century, and remained so until the expulsion of the Jews occurred in the sixteenth century. It then became the church of Santa Maria di Scolanova. The original building is returned to use in 2005 and today belongs to the Jewish community in town.
The church is accessed by means of an external staircase adjoining the western facade. Inside there is a painting of Byzantine origin of the Madonna of the Martyrs, protector of sailors. The main facade, which opens on Scolanova is sober and bare, with a triangular pediment on top. Stands a bell tower topped by a Star of David made of wrought iron. The plan is a Latin cross, with a nave covered by cross vaults. |
