Description:
The core of the old city is the 14th century mother church, dedicated to St. Mary of the nativity. According to the tradition, its building was commissioned in 1316 by the prince Philip I of Taranto of the Angevine house in honor of the Madonna. Tradition tells that the prince was hunting in the forest of Noci when he was caught in a rainstorm and was risking his life. Then he took shelter under a nut tree and made a promise that if he escaped the danger he would have erected a church in honor of the Madonna
