General information
Chiesa rupestre di S. Marco
Church, ruined church, chapel, temple
Catholic
no
The first excavation of the church could be dated back to the tenth century, while the carvings and graffiti etched on semi-apses on the intervention as well, fall in a subsequent stage of completion dating from the twelfth century, the last period of Byzantine rule. The church is entered through a narthex with two deep front arcosolia one of which is connected a devotional panel with the effigy of St. Marco and the invocation of the commissioners. This is followed by a hall divided into two aisles separated by pillars and by the central presbytery ending with two apses. The structure belongs to the scheme of the churches to twin apses, of which the right has a chair reserved for the commissioner. The second apse would carry out a function of prostheses or diaconico or both for the preparation of the Eucharistic rite and conservation of liturgical objects, hypothesis supported by the fact that is not accessible by the respective aisle from which is separated by means of a high parapet. The right apse is also a rare case for the presence of an open window in order to filter the light in the right aisle.
