Description:
The ravine Laterza is considered the most representative example of karst-tectonic phenomenon at European level. It covers an area of 800 hectares with a length of 12 km, a width of 500 meters and reaches a maximum depth of 200 meters. The entire area is under protection as an oasis for bird protection since 1984. It is managed by Lipu (Italian League for Bird Protection) since 1999. The Oasis is surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation and endemic plant and animal species typical of the Mediterranean.
