| The St. Leonardo church is situated in Antica quarter, the most important centre of the Medieval village characterized by a fountain and during the XII century, by a domus of Teutonic knights dedicated to St. Maria. The church is made up of a cave that symbolizes the central part and another building structure. In 1700, a little masonry chapel was realized above it. The rocky structure maintains a fresco of St. Nicola placed on a headstone with an exegetic written: S[ANCTUS] NICOLAUS (photo 1), an eighteenth century altar (photo 2) with a relief written M. M. D. (Maria Mater Domini) and on the right, a painting that represents the Buona Morte (photo 3). The church is dedicated to St. M. Maria Materdomini and is connected to the popular piety since the past. In fact an important holy day was celebrated every first Sunday of November and during the celebration it was possible taste chestnuts and new wine. |
