Castellaneta, in the province of Taranto, is located on a ledge which emerges from a deep ravine in the Murge, 245 metres above the sea. Two thirds of it is surrounded by a protected oasis of more than 400 hectares which offers a site characterised by grey limestone walls dotted with prickly pear trees. The origins of this town date back to the 10th century, when peasants settled in the natural local cavities to escape pirate raids. The alleyways of its historical centre, composed of the Sacco and Muricello neighbourhoods, only let one person by at a time, recalling the efforts made to protect the city from enemies during the various attacks which took place over time.

A walk characterized by glamour, in the historical centre of Castellaneta, in the footsteps of film star Rodolfo Valentino, who was born here on 6 May 1895. A ceramic monument dedicated to him was put on centrally located Via Roma in 1961, and a short way away is the house where he was born.
