Description:
The crypt is now the sacristy of S. Maria Assunta church. The shape of the rock church of St. Maria del Pesco, transformed over the centuries after the construction of the upper church, is still readable and corresponds to a type widespread in Apulia (especially in Ionian area) between the end of the eleventh and the mid twelfth century, in 'the so called transition period that saw the demise of the Byzantine rule in southern Italy and the advent of the Normans. Some rooms cave near the outer courtyard were probably intended as a monastery. The original entrance to the crypt should correspond to the two passages with round arch that today connect S. Maria Assunta with the vestry. The crypt has undergone significant transformation interventions that have altered the presbytery area especially with the destruction of original apses.
