Chiesa e convento di Santa Chiara

The complex of Santa Chiara back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, perhaps to 1257, when the nuns Clare came to Andria. The church is contemporary or perhaps just after the church of San Francesco. In 1528 the church of Santa Chiara was severely damaged in the looting carried out by French troops of Odette de Foix. In 1705 the convent was purchased by Bishop Ariano, who made the seminary. In 1800, after another sack by the French, the church was rebuilt and settled the brotherhoods of Santa Chiara and the SS. Stigmata. The Bishop Cosenza will set up an orphanage and the public hospital: it remained in operation until 1945, when the hospital began its current activities. Entrusted to the church of San Francesco, the church has continued to perform their functions until the early decades of the '900. In 2004 the church was restored and reopened for worship. The statement is very simple and is based on the Romanesque style in the center window and bell tower side. Inside, two pointed Gothic arches support the roof of the church. They are following the altar, recently stripped of the baroque stucco (XVII-XVIII century), with the carved image of Santa Chiara; the neo Gothic theca which houses the statue of Santa Chiara, built in the workshop of Valerio Jaccarino; some crosses carried in procession on Good Friday and the new banner made by Pia Crociferi Association in 2003.
