The Shrine of Our Lady of Altomare stands on Basilian laura S. Sofia. The particular worship dates back to 1598, when there was the miracle of the young girl fell into a cistern-corresponding to the cave church of St. Sofia - and that, thanks to the Virgin Mary, depicted in the cave, was found unharmed after three days. The image of the Madonna called "dell'Altomare" (Deep Sea) because it found submerged in water - belonged to a cycle of frescoes of the rock church, and since then was much revered. In the seventeenth century provided for the construction of a church, which assumed the dimensions of the shrine in the second half of the nineteenth century from 1875 to 1877. The neoclassical facade is attributed to Frederick Santacroce. The sanctuary has a single nave with tufa walls, as well as the Laura of origin. The frescoes were removed and placed on the altar of the new church, in which one can admire the old Basilian laura: a circular pool with a diameter of 4 feet and over a meter deep.
