| Maruggio is 36 km far away from Taranto and is 26 meters on the sea level. Its geographical position makes it easy to reach also from the other towns of Salento.
Maruggio was founded by Gorgolano, a governator of the Byzantine empereor Niceforo Foca, with the union from the ancient hamlets of Castigno, Olivaro, Albano, Roselle and San Nicolò. After it was governed since 1317 to 1819 from the Knights of Malta. Then, in 1819, it became a free common. During its history it has been attacked by Saracens that however destroyed it only once but no one died in their attacks.The Castle was built in the X century but at the end of the '300 the Baly rebuilt it. Since then it was renamed and called "Palazzo dei Commendatori". |
