| Chiesa Matrice with a Latin cross plan, built between 1898 and the beginning of the 1900s. The approximately 34 metres tall dome is covered with polychrome tiles. The bell tower, in mixed Romanesque-Gothic style is about 36 metres tall with a very pointed spire The materials used were mainly tuff and local Mozart stone, with cornices, rosettes, pediments and mouldings in finely worked Carovigno and Ostuni stone. It contains valuable paintings by various local artists and wooden statues from Trentino and Bolzano.
Inside the Church there is a sepulchre in Mazzaro stone and marble, containing the body of Archpriest Father Giuseppe Caliandro, who was determined to build the Church and ran it for more than 50 years. The beautiful Christian Temple of Villa Castelli was built entirely by local workers, to a design made by an engineer, also a local man. |
