| At the foot of the Serra of Supersano, was the village of Sombrino, located near the Wood of Belvedere and near the ancient road that descended from Cutrofiano to Supersano. The sources of the thirteenth century refer to the church of San Giacomo (de Sancti Iacobi seem), survived today with the dedication to the Virgin. In the Middle Ages the church was a possession of the Italo-greek monastery of San Nicola di Casole, near Otranto. Today there are only ruins of the church with a single nave and some fragments of frescoes. During the sixteenth century the building underwent profound changes.
Until the eighteenth century the church of Sombrino played an important role along the pilgrimage route leading to the sanctuary of Santa Maria in finibus Terre Leuca. At the same time he was visited by the Abbot of Saint-Non, the author of Voyage Pittoresque des Royaumes de Naples et de Sicile (1781-1786), while he was traveling between Otranto and Gallipoli.
Today it is in the context of an interesting landscape. |
