| The Polisano Menhir in Giuggianello takes its name from the masseria or fortified farmhouse which stands in the countryside outside the town on the road that leads from Muro Leccese to Minervino.
The menhir is a monolith made of carparo in the shape of a parallelepiped, 3.5 metres high, embedded in the ground.
Like other megalithic monuments present in the Salento area, legend has it that the Polisano menhir is a prehistoric structure.
Recently there has been a great deal of debate regarding this interpretation, especially since many menhirs would seem to be located in places of Christian worship.
It may be that some of these megaliths date back to medieval times or that, if they are older, they went through a process of “Christianization” through the engraving of symbols or having a cross places on top.
