| The parish church of Presicce is situated in the same place of the old church, destroyed by the earthquake in 1743. In spite of the attempts to repair it, as Arditi testifies, the church was no longer 'worthy' or 'suitable' for the growing population. The University of Presicce decided to rebuild all over again the destroyed church in 1765. The works started in 1778 and finished eighteen months later. The parish church was opened in 1781. The inscription, put the same year on the main door by Marquis Arditi, indicated that the inhabitants of Presicce got into possession of the church from the beginnings. The architect was Saverio Negro, who designed a large building which was 'agile, high and above all well-lighted'. The Renaissance bell tower dates back to the middle of the 16th century. It is still undamaged and next to the parish church. The church of deads is an integrant part of the church and it is so named because of the mouths of underground graves that are now closed and no longer visible. The date 1575 is on the altar of the small church. |
