| In 1559 Martino Alfarano made a bequest to build the monastery of the Carmelites at Presicce. The monastery was built between 1585 and 1590 and was consecrated to S.Giovanni Evangelista. The Carmelites stayed there until 1809 when the convent was abolished and given to the Municipal Administration. It was restored in 1883 on a project of Carlo Luigi Arditi. The convent was restored again in 1930-35 and at present it is used as the seat of sociocultural services and of the Municipal Administration of Presicce. The church consecrated to Madonna del Carmine is part of the convent. It was also built between 1585 and 1590 and was consecrated by Bishop Ferrer in 1605. The church, which is the seat of the laical confraternity, was seriously damaged in 1945 in consequence of the collapse of the bell tower. It was immediately restored thanks to the contribution of the population. |
