Crypt "La Madonna del Passo"
Church, ruined church, chapel, temple
Catholic
no
The Crypt Madonna del Passo, on the outskirts of Specchia, is a small rock chapel, quadrangular in shape, with a neoclassical style colonnade now marking its entrance. The altar, from the Renaissance period, holds a painting of the Virgin with Child. Despite the building not holding particular interest for tourists, the crypt of Madonna del Passo is of great religious interest to the inhabitants of the town. The creation of this place of worship is steeped in legend, a legend that is widespread in other parts of this Salento area, where the crypt was discovered by a shepherd who, while searching for a lost sheep, found it in a ravine in front of an image of the Virgin. From that time on the townspeople have worshipped this place which is just one of the sanctuaries that are dotted all over the hills in this area as far as the large sanctuary in Santa Maria di Leuca.
