| The chapel of San Nicola di Mira, situated not far from the fortified centre of Specchia, probably dates back to the 11th century and is, together with the nearby church of Sant’Eufemia, one of the areas medieval monuments.
Wholly restored in the 16th century and changed from Greek rite to Latin rite, the church still has a plaque/tomb which reveals its Byzantine origins.
In the 1970s a pseudo-circular tomb stone was found near the church with a Greek cross carved on it.
Several medieval tombs were uncovered next to the church , evidence that the church has remained constantly in use.
The church as it stands today has simple architectural lines and has no furnishings inside.
The only exception being the 18th century altar, surmounted by a majestic statue of San Nicola, which pre-dates the altar.
The church has been recently restored thanks to funds from the “Capo S. Maria di Leuca” GAL organisation.
In three of the four niches present in the building some Byzantine style icons have been placed. These were made by the nuns of the Holy Trinity Monastery (Monastero SS. Trinità delle Clarisse Cappuccine) in Alessano
