The Church of San Domenico
Church, ruined church, chapel, temple
Catholic
no
The Church of San Domenico dates back to 1688. The façade, now in baroque style, faces onto the central Giuseppe Pisanelli piazza, but until the 17th century, the main entrance was on the road which is now dedicated to Guidone Aymone. The baroque church was built onto an older building which faced east-west, canonically oriented. The inside of the building is made up of a large rectangular nave with seven chapels opening off it, which contain some interesting oil paintings, some of which were painted by Saverio Lillo of Ruffano in 1769. The choir, in walnut, is of particular artistic merit. It was carved in 1703 and its ornate straight lines are reminiscent of the Renaissance. And the painting portraying the Circumcision painted by Coppola of Gallipolli. Local history tells us that this convent in Tricase was, chronologically, the sixth Domenican convent ever to be founded.
