the Rio Canal
Natural attraction
no
Between the Port of Tricase and Marina Serra, on a really attractive stretch of coast road lined with flowering oleanders, you can find a natural inlet: the Rio Canal or as it is known locally “lu Riu”. Here the water is crystal clear with dramatic high cliffs. Along the cliffs you can see the Matrona Cave, which can be accessed from the sea. Again close to the coast road you can see the Palane Towers and a part of an ancient circular cave called “Acquaviva” because it was a source of fresh water which at low tide flows into the sea from two separate sources. At the top of the Calino slope, before continuing along the coast road from Novaglie down to Leuca, you can stop at “Belvedere”, a natural balcony looking out over the sea giving you a panoramic view of the coast as far as the Andrano and Castro marinas.Just two kilometres further on is the temple of Santa Maria della Serra. This church, thought to date back to the 16th century, was upgraded to the status of a Sanctuary on the 1st November 1950, for the Holy Year.
