The Cathedral is dedicated to Maria SS Assunta in Cielo (Holy Mary of the Assumption) and is in the centre of Ugento, where a gothic cathedral once stood. The original cathedral was destroyed at the beginning of the 16th century and rebuilt around 1700. It opened for worship in 1745 and the façade, in neoclassical style is from 1855. The church is divided up into three naves, the main nave ends with the apse where the main altar stands, which, like the balustrade and the baptism font has marble decoration work from 1740. In the apse there is a large painting from 1944 portraying the Assumption of the Virgin who is depicted surrounded by all of the saints most venerated in Ugento. The paintings for the cathedral altars are worth special note. Among these the altar dedicated to Saint Vincenzo, patron saint of Ugento, the altar dedicated to the Souls in Purgatory where there is a painting from 1742 portraying Our Lady of the Carmelites as well as the altar added in the 18th according to the wishes of the illustrious house of the Princes d’Amore of Ugento dedicated to Saint Catherine of Fieschi and to Saint Andrew the Apostle. In the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament, on the right as you come in, you can see a painting entitled “Christ King of the Universe” (‘Cristo Re dell'Universo’), painted by Tito Ridolfi in 1941. Again on the right hand side there is a large rococo altar of 1720 with a valuable painting, thought to be by Oronzo Tiso, portraying The Last Supper. Following this there is an altar dedicated to Our Lady of Desolation, with a painting from 1800 and another altar dedicated to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary. Finally there is an old pipe organ, which still works.
