The church of Saint Biagio in Ugento was built around 1800, on the site where another, much larger, church once stood. In 1881 it was consecrated and dedicated to Our Lady of Assumption. The church has a neoclassical façade; it is octagonal in shape and has an upstairs gallery. On three sides of the octagon there are three altars, the largest of these is dedicated to Saint Biagio, whereas the two smaller altars, neo-gothic in style, are dedicated to the Sacred Heart and to Our Lady of Sorrows.
The best time to visit is during a festival or Saint’s day; on July 5th-7th Saint Domenica is celebrated, 1st-4th October S. Francesco, or for the Fiera di S.ta Lucia on December 13th.
