| The church of Saint Anthony of Padua (sant’Antonio da Padova) in Ugento was originally annexed to the convent of the Frati Minori Osservanti, now home to the Municipal Museum (Museo Comunale). The monastery was built in the 1400s by Count of Ugento Raimondello Orsini Del Balzo and was dedicated to Santa Maria della Pietà (Our Lady of Compassion). After the dissolution of the church and confiscation of its goods the monastery was given to the town council for use as a school or offices. The church was therefore closed to the public; it was reopened after the birth of the Confraternity of Our Lady of Sorrows. This church holds some interesting paintings by Lillo, portraying the Saints which the altars are dedicated to. |
