The “Adolfo Colosso Collection”, housed in the rooms of the building of the same name in Ugento, contains numerous archaeological finds, it was Baron Adolfo Colosso who began to collect them, an art and history-lover. The materials cover a chronological period which goes from the 6th century B.C. through to post-medieval times. Among the finds from the Messapian and Hellenistic period, next to local artefacts, there are vases of attic manufacture and ceramics in what is known as “Gnathia style”. There are also Greek oil lamps, Italian and Roman, clay statuettes of female figures, tintinnabulum (bells), a pileus headpiece/helmet and a plate or disc with various objects embossed on it. There are also several sculptured decorations in the Collection. Among these a head from the end of the 4th century B.C., a male torso, a fragment of high relief probably portraying a warrior on horseback, a fragment of marble showing an animal and fragments of a colossal statue which may have been of Hercules. There are also numerous inscriptions and several objects ranging from the medieval period to the modern age, arms and cannonballs among them.
