| The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca of the Belvedere was built between 1685 and 1709 by Baron Annibale Francesco Capable. The architectural complex is situated along the route that pilgrims followed to arrive at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Leuca. The complex was a place of prayer, to pilgrims and animals, who were resting in the basement of the sanctuary, before leaving at dawn.
The church is an important example of Renaissance architecture and is preceded by a pronaos with large arches. Inside the church there are several seventeenth-eighteenth century frescoes depicting St. Lazarus, Saint Lucia, St. Horace, Santa Barbara, Santa Marina, St. Francis of Paola, St. Paschal Baylon, San Gennaro and San Leonardo. Near the church there are still feeding, the remains of the mill, the great arched entrance area where fairs were held, the remains of an inn. |
