| This imposing medieval building is one of the most interesting examples of late Romanesque architecture in the Salento. Today, as in the Middle Ages, pilgrims enter through a protruding portal framed by three concentric bands of carvings with floral motifs. The scene of the Annunciation sculpted in the architrave shows the Virgin seated on a throne welcoming the Archangel Gabriel while, as in a comic strip, three scrolls next to the figures show the evangelical dialogue to the faithful. A 14th-century Byzantine sundial is built into the southern wall of the building, marking the time of the settlement’s activities. |
