The Montevergine sanctuary was built in 1707 above the cave church where there was the Byzantine icon depicting the Madonna and Child, according to legend, found by a shepherd in 1595. The church has a simple facade with central portal. The interior, with a rectangular plan has a single nave with a staircase that leads to the crypt. Upstairs, there is an altar, built in Baroque style in 1727 by Don Francisco Vernazza. In an adjoining room is kept the statue in papier mache dated 1834. Currently the sanctuary is surrounded by a pine forest, a destination for tourists and pilgrims.
