| The Aragonese castle of Palmariggi, built in the fifteenth century, was part of a large defense system intended to protect the nearby city of Otranto against enemy attacks from the hinterland.
The fort was square and had four corner towers (three circular and square). Up until the last century, there was a moat and traces of the drawbridge. In 1724, part of the walls and of the parade was changed to the construction of the Palace Vernazza. In the postwar years (1946-56) the castle was demolished. Now is a curtain with two towers, recently restored.
