| The Church of Casole, located approximately three miles from the Cittadella of Copertino, was built before the eleventh by Byzantine monks. Around the church developed a rural village that was destroyed at the end of the eleventh and in Norman became an important centre. In was destroyed a second time and in XVI century the people gathered around the Monastery of St. Mary of Casole.
The current appearance of the church dates from the first half of the sixteenth century, when it was rebuilt after the destruction carried out by Turkish raids. It has a simple prospectus, on the entrance door there is a lunette containing a fresco of the Virgin between St. Francis and St. Anthony. |
